The move was shocking because it happened just after his international teammate John Mikel Obi had just signed for Chelsea following a protracted transfer tussle with Manchester United and greater things were expected from Obasi than a provincial team in Bundesliga 2. As it transpired, Hoffenheim secured promotion and Obasi was one of their standout performers with 12 goals in 27 games. The club also took the Bundesliga by storm, racing to the top of the standings to win the unofficial title of “Autumn champions” (first place at the winter break) before losing steam in the second round to finish the season in seventh place. Obasi played three more seasons but a succession of injuries limited his performance until he made a mid-season loan move to Schalke 04 until the end of the season but the move was made permanent as he signed a three-year deal at the Veltins Arena. More injury worries curbed his appearances for Schalke but he saw his contract out before moving away from the Bundesliga. A graduate of Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 teams, Obasi was a part of the team that won silver at the 2008 Olympics and also won bronze at the AFCON in 2010 as well as competed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He’s currently with Swedish side AIK Solna.
